Hi, I'd like very much to find working and parts Sanyo RP-8880 receivers. I'm hoping to own a fully-working RP-8880 in this lifetime. Oh, also I'd like to buy vintage catalogs from McGee Radio Co. that include the RP-8880. Thanks, this forum is a new discovery for me, looks great!

Hi Chuck,

The Sanyo RP-8880 is an absolutely gorgeous radio, and with its many controls is a magnificent thing to use. Though not as selective or sensitive as the Panasonic RF-2200, you can read the frequency to 1 kHz on its analog dial using the calibration markers, and the radio is stable enough to use on SSB. It's as big as the Grundig 800 but much classier looking with its dual multicolor moving-tape dials.

I've got a couple of these; one fully working and one not. I've also got a (rather ratty) service manual, so there's hope for the inoperative one to some day join the land of the living again.

Good luck on your hunt, and feel free to contact me with any questions.

I,ve just got hold of a sony rp8880 but its dead on fm/sw.
Rather than guessing my way around the board and locating the fault,i was hoping somebody outhere can help me with a circuit diagram. On fm you just get the loud hiss as if youre of frequency on sw just a bit of hum.mw/lw are fine.
ok thanks everyone look forward to a response.

It is very common for RP-8880s to be inoperative on one or more bands. It seems the 8880 is the victim of having been built using less than quality components at strategic places in the design. One of my 8880s has the FM band problem, although it does begin to oscillate in the upper half or so of the band. I don't know if it's a transistor and/or electrolytics that are faulty here. It's hard to work on the RP-8880 without taking the mechanical assemblies fully apart, which may be beyond my capabilities.

Another common problem with this radio is apparently dead shortwave bands. Good news here for some owners is that patiently working the bandswitches around can bring the radio to life! This has worked with one of my three units.

Regarding the RP-8880's performance on mediumwave, I can report from my location that a well-aligned RP-8880 can come close to the Panasonic RF-2200 in sensitivity. In this location the MW dial is full of signals at night, though I agree that selectivity is wide. The narrow filter really helps here but retuning may be necessary unless the alignment is very accurate. The RP-8880 is really unique in its design, for me it spans the decades of radio to look at this radio! I'm still interested in finding working and parts units! Thanks...

Hi there ray300, have you had any luck fixing your Sanyo RP8880 radio. I have the same problem as you. LW, MW and MB bands work but FM and all SW bands do not fundtion. Seems like some common power supply fault possibly.

I do not have a schematic or service manual and would very much appreciate info from anyone who can help as it would be a great radio to have fully working.

My email is timj123con@netspace.net.au (just leave out the 123 spam stopper to gert the right email address.

many thanks, timbo

re: Tom
Lookin for a RF-2200 ? Check e-bay for "panasonic shortwave". There's just about always one or two up for sale. Plan on about $125-$200 (US)for one. Well worth the bread for MW/AM dx. I have a CC radio (audio really lacks range midrange only speaker yuck!!!),GE Superadios (1,2,+3),and way too many others to list. None of them even come close to the Panasonic for MW/AM...Oh, yea...and the SW is pretty good too. lol. It's not bad for SSB, but can be tricky to tune.

I think I still have the schematic on file, give me a day or two to find it.

First, patiently and gently work the bandswitches back and forth, again take care not to be too forceful. Often this will bring an 8880 back to life!

Hi Folks,

I have scanned my rather murkey RP-8880 service manual, but at 300 dpi it's over 50 MB, so you'll need a big email account if you want me to send it to you.

So far, I've sent paper and electronic copies to three people who have the same problem with their 8880's as I have with mine (and many others report) -- the SW bands are dead. No one has reported the cure, after several months of having the manual. I've sprayed the switch contacts on mine with DeOxit with no luck, so perhaps it's more involved than that. It would be nice if those who are working on these radios would tell us the fix!

I also have a lovely high-res color photo of this magnificent machine if someone wants it. It's about 250 kB.

When you find the file(s), send me a copy and I'll make a PDF and post it on the website so folks can download it for free, since this seems to be a topic of interest.

Hi All

Still trying to get my rp8880 going .Can't find a thing wrong yet.switches appear to work.I have another owner in Austalia working on the same problem. He suggested the 10.7mhz isn't going ,i did try replacing this with an injected signal and the radio went quiet on fm as it would when locked onto a station with no audio, but it would not tune.i'll keep trying though.

Hello CHUCK Stil haven,t found a RP8880 SANYO ?
Maybe you need some nice pic ,s of mine.

Maybe i want to sell mine to buy something else for the collection .
I asked 125 euro,s for it i don,t if thats resonable.
The problem is the shipping costs.

My still best receiver is the RF2200 !
But the sanyo works also fine you need to do more with the
antenne adjust button on the higher frequenties thats true.
but sometimes its a dusty contact in the bandswitch that makes the low noise you here.

The Barlow wadley is very good (XCR30) from afrika i have two.
and A panasonic RF 1150 (like the cougar 7)
A Grundig satelite 3000 big and heavy.
Yesterday i bought a KOYO KTR1770 11 bands just like new
and shortwave and vhf I think from 1970-1974 with manual.

So you all see i am a little crazy.
and from The netherlands.

Greeting Arie .

I just recieved a Sanyo RP8880 9 band SW Radio from my Father in Laws estate. This thing looks almost new. But its either operator error or the thing just won't play or recieve anything. I know absolutey nothing about shortwave radios. Any ideas or suggestions? I guess I would sell it if the offer sounds reasonable?

I just got an RP 8880 via eBay. Cabinet is broken up, and there's damage from leaking batteries, but all of the bands
on the FM/AM/MB/LW side work great. SW is dead, but the
RF gain pot causes noise.

I suspect the FET that comes right after the antenna. That is what takes out the SW on Sangean portables. I see no static-protection diodes. This FET is located right near the
plug where the antennas attach to the main circuit board.

What an interesting creature this thing is inside! Behavior
is interesting, too, in that the RF gain affects the FM band.

Anyone know what the replacement part for the FET would be?
It looks like a big pain to get the circuit board out to desolder it. I'm thinking of cutting the leads and tack-soldering from the top.

I have a good schematic for Sanyo RP 8880 I send it to you when you send a post card to me.My address is Mr. Kaino Kahkonen Murkionkatu 7 B 10 20740 Turku Finland .My Sanyo shortwave was dead and I changed first fourlegged FET and second shortwave oscillator transistor ,I thought it was difficult to disasseble the radio so I cut the heads of FETs and transistors and soldered new ones to the legs, with tiny soldering iron and the radio worked fine.So send a card to me and you get the schematic.

Hello all,

I have noticed that some people have problems with their SANYO RP-8880. Well, I am one of them: the short wave bands do not work at all, and the FM works only from about 100 to 108 MHz.
I am very interested in a circuit diagram or a copy of the service manual.
Also, I am interested how anyone has fixed these (common?) problems with this radio.

Thanks in advance for your reply.

Satboy

Scooby...

Just to start, does your 8880 power up, are you able to hear any signals at all? First try the MW (standard AM broadcast) and FM bands, at the leftmost tuning dial.

Try tuning across these entire bands, with the RF gain up all the way on MW and try different RF gain settings on FM. This is a quirky radio and in some cases FM stations will be received with the RF gain set back down a ways from maximum.

We'll take it from there next.
