The Novatech Pilot II was designed in California and made in Japan for those needing a portable radio that could be used as a direction finder. Special brackets were supplied in order to mount it in an aircraft or on board ship as well as a leather case for protection from the elements. The frequency coverage is long wave, broadcast band, medium wave (1.6 - 4.5 mhz) and the VHF(AM) aircraft band (108 - 135 mhz). It is a well designed set with a TRF stage and other features like squelch and signal strength meter. The audio quality is powerful but low-fi. I have the manual for mine if you'd like more information or the schematic.

Re: Pilot II I'll scan the schematic and other information and send it to you. You'll need to post your e-mail address or add it to your profile. The main problems with mine were slipping dial cord, several bad capacitors and scratchy volume control. It's not my favorite radio because of it's limited audio bandwidth but I use it often to monitor 3880 AM ham activity. I understand that Novatech made several flavors of this radio for different frequency ranges. Dave

I've scanned the manual (including schematic) for the Nova-Tech Pilot II and can send it to anyone who leaves their address here. There are 20 jpeg files of about 50K each.

G'day from Australia, I would very much appreciate an email copy of the Pilot II manual and schematic please, I found one of these (in absolutely mint condition complete with leather case and all 3 antennae)which originally belonged to my dad in a box of old radio components, when clearing out my mum's house recently, It is not receiveing efficiently and I suspect a few dry caps,it discharged a new battery in less than a minute and the larger of the two tranny's on the board was getting hot, My email address is manta@winshop.com.au regards Alan VK4NKL

I know this is a really old thread, but when I googled the Novatech pilotII this discussion is one of the things that came up. There is an external VHF antenna jack on the side of this radio and I'm wondering if there is a stock antenna I could buy to fir this plug?

I have a NOVA-TECH Pilot 11 receiver.........Has been used extensively since purchasing in Sydney on 7AUG1970 (still have original receipt!!!) Have all original bits and pieces (plus the styrophome it came in!!!..... The only bugs I have had with it is the volume control / on-off....the pot wore out from constant switching on and off (bad design, the on/off switch should have been separate)....It still performs well and sits with rest of the Ham Radio gear in the shack. Has anyone entertained the idea of the inclusion of a BFO into the circuit to assist tuning in the aircraft beacons on the "BEACON" band. Aircraft use a BFO to assist tuning their receivers to this band. I don't think it would be too much drama but am a little hesitant on changing the sets originalty....any ideas..?? Ta Blue VK2CBN

Dave, Thank you for your published info. on the Nova-tech Pilot II VHF Radio. I have one I purchased in August, 1968, but I'm having some minor trouble with it. I noticed-- from one of your earlier post-- that you have both the "Manual" and the "Schematic" for this interestng radio receiver. Is there any chance I could obtain a copy of both the manual and the schematic from you, after such a long time? Or, do you know where and how I might obtain these two essential items, please? I live in Brockville, Ontario, Canada, and my e-mail address is dmf@metalex.com I shall look forward to hearing from you at your convenience--or from anyone else in this forum who can help me to locate either one, or both, of these two items. Many thanks. Donn

Looking for schematic & manual for the NovaTech PilotII radio. Mine is in rather poor condition. The back is missing, and the longwave and aircraft bands don't work. I was able to get the other bands to work by cleaning the bandswitch. Also, need to know the IF frequency for the aircraft band. Is it 10.7 MHz? Is it double conversion, by chance? IF's seem to peak at around 9.7 and 10.7 MHz...just wondered if a slug had been tightened down because it was "loose"... Also looking for a back and 2 knobs for the radio. Would appreciate it if you could email .pdf of manual/schematic to me at don358@yahoo.com. Also looking for a back for the radio. Thanks in advance dw

I also have a NovaTech Pilot II radio. Somewhat of a hand-me-down as it was my Father's, a private pilot for many years during the 60's and through the 70's. However, he passed away a couple of years ago and had left batteries in the radio which corroded and pretty much destroyed all the metal contacts within the battery holder itself (4ea AA type). I joined this Message Board mainly to find out, if I could, if any of you have ideas on where I might acquire another battery holder for the radio in question. Many thanks in advance...

Hi Dave, I inherited a mint condition Pilot II from nova-tech, and have picked up many signals, but am in search of the manual and schematic as well, would you mind sending me a copy of these? Thank you, kabell231@hotmail.com, I also have no idea what this is worth...I often have antique dealers stop by, and would like to know if I recieved a valuable offer...or is this something I should never let go?
